CHARACTER NAME: Lenore Vandernacht.BACKGROUND
CANON: Nevermore (Webtoon)
CANON POINT: Episode 60.
AGE: Somewhere in the mid twenties or onward based on the anachronistic sentiment that she's past the age where it would be sensible to participate in the social season.
HISTORY: Look a wiki link! Lenore has been shaped into an eccentric by the time she's lived in due to the fact that she often didn't want to adhere to rigid social conventions. First deemed infirm after she survives an accident that injures her hip and keeps her bed bound and attended to by the dubious medical practices of the time; then characterized as a hysteric and mad woman as the bleak isolation begins to get to her in ways that are considered intolerable to the civilized sensitivities of the time.POWERS
Having become "dead" in her parents eyes Lenore is kept isolated in the attic until the series' other lead, Annabel Lee makes social visits between the two women into a regular occurrence. For a time it's a safe bubble for the both of them from the expectations of society and the two become very good friends(TM)—but it can only last so long. Following Annabel Lee's departure Lenore decides it's all of nothing and gets up to some trouble making. Namely arson, larceny, and fraud as she sets her family's cottage in the Finger Lakes ablaze to fake her death to then assume a different identity so she can go reunite with Annabel.
At the beginning of Nevermore we see Lenore again but it's in the afterlife. Among several of other recently departed souls at Nevermore Academy there are trials to determine which among them will win the chance to be brought back to life. As the audience, and for Lenore herself, there is a large gap in memories from before that moment while she was still alive. As the story progresses, however, she begins to gain more memories that fill in the gaps. From the get go Lenore is very rebellious and does not play by the rules the Deans of the Academy has set for the lost souls. Quite notably, she has accrued the most "demerits" from the Deans and and the other staff at Nevermore because of the headstrong quality of hers. Due to this quality she ends up collecting a band of "misfits" quite easily.
PERSONALITY:What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?
Lenore is the type to wear her emotions on her sleeve at most times not because she isn't capable of pulling off deception—because she definitely has—but it is her modus operandi not to. Thus the truest answer to this question is that the first impression Lenore makes is often fairly authentic to who she is. It's only a matter of another character coming to have a more refined understanding as time goes on.
For better or for worse Lenore tends to make a lasting impression during first meetings, and doubly so when faced with authority figures that are enforcing rules with insufficient explanation. What that impression usually looks like is a strong willed person who isn't afraid to have her opinion or to wear her emotions. She interrupts the middle of a lesson to call the Deans out on their cruelty; the Deans punish her for it. Her immediate follow up is to double down. This, like many other times, is also an example of her having the compassion to cuss out people for being inhumane.
This disposition has had the tendency to draw in fellow trouble makers, those who are discarded for being "dead weight," and those who can be considered misfits in most ways. Annabel, the secondary protagonist, notes that Lenore is "[...] terribly charismatic, whether you know it or not." What Annabel Lee is alluding to is Lenore's penchant for being loyal to those held dear. On numerous occasions Lenore puts herself in mortal danger to save friends, and they often respond in kind. This too is an aspect of her determination but it's one that other characters may or may not learn to refine their understanding of her character.
How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?
Lenore faces stressful situations head on in a way that even some of her cast mates look to later as a "what would Lenore do?" when she's absent. She's quick to come to a snap decision regarding what the best course of action will be without getting bogged down in strategy. This means she's very reactive and sometimes this means getting maimed because she has prioritized a friend's safety over her own.
On one occasion she grabs the attention of a horrible creature with the hopes that her two companions can sneak away undetected. In another, to complete a trial that's deep underwater she comes up with the plan to use an anchor to cross the distance faster so they will have less time to drown—which is indeed dangerous but ultimately ends up being the correct path to take despite being a on the spot plan.
Somewhat related to that plan; in times of duress she's been known to rally allies into action more than once. In the aforementioned case she does so by convincing her team to go through with it while addressing and comforting one member's thalassophobia.
What are your character’s fears? How do they hinder or challenge your character?
At the Nevermore Academy there were trials and tribulations that were based on phobias. Lenore, and her team of two others, manage to crawl through each chamber until they reach the one labeled with dementophobia. During this trial Lenore swiftly falls to the illusions being presented by the supernatural trial.
This is a challenge for her because she doesn't want to be insane like she's been accused of being by others. As Lenore recalls when she enters the gate of the academy even her inner voice recalls that her own mother said she was "a bit touched in the head." With this characterization being thrown upon her often it's no wonder any moment where it might seem remotely true does cause Lenore to pause and steep in mental anguish over it. In such moments it's common enough for an internal voice of doubt and self loathing to appear. Saying things along the lines of "it's your fault Lenore."
These are one of the only times where Lenore might hesitate to take action if only because it will always take her a moment to shake it off. Despite the distress it causes not even this has a track record of permanently halting Lenore in her tracks—she often pushes through it eventually.
INVENTORY: At her canon point she does have a pendulum on her (the kind used for communicating with ghosts) but I'm fine with it being yoinked away inexplicably if that's needed.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:SAMPLES.
Despite existing at an academy filled with people who have something known as a spectre form Lenore is in all ways a regular human being because she hasn't unlocked hers. A spectre is essentially what it says on the tin: it's a ghostly form someone dead can take. These are forms that have specific abilities based on the type of entity they are. These entity forms can only be maintained for a time and cannot be indefinite.
Please note: Lenore does not have hers unlocked so to say but I making a note here anyways. If Lenore unlocks her spectre in canon I'll have to revisit this! I also don't mind if mods want to preemptively nerf it out of existence.
Technically, she is dead but as is explained in episode 3 by Ms. Poppet explain that means she's both dead and alive because Nevermore is a way point between the land of the living and the land of the dead. I believe this already means she's corporeal since she can already be hurt, need to eat, etc. BUT in accordance to the powers that be even if she wasn't already she sure is corporeal now!
NERFING: Putting aside the potential outlined above she's very human and can only do things that very normal humans can do.
WEAKNESSES: Basically anything that could maim or kill a human being.

May. 28th, 2023 10:26 pmSomeday very soon I promise I'll actually provide a proper synopsis. Until that day you can find Nevermore here. Until that day—
Anyone (un)lucky enough to pass on and find themselves involuntarily enrolled at Nevermore academy is expected to go through a curriculum to recover the memories of their demise so they may compete for a second chance at life.
...But also (and this is so important) it's about Edgar Allan Poe flavored sapphics.
